What does a humidifier do?

Humidifiers release moisture into the air in your home by turning water into water vapor. They are used with your furnace to add adjustable humidity to very dry air that can cause discomfort or difficulty breathing, static, dry skin, and other problems. A central-air humidifier uses water from your plumbing, so it does not need to be refilled.

Do I need a humidifier?

Humidifiers are used with your furnace throughout the winter. If you find that bread goes stale very quickly, there is a lot of static, and the air is dry in your home, or if you or a family member find breathing the air in your home uncomfortable, you may need a humidifier to add moisture to the air.

People with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory ailments have greater difficulty breathing dry air, and it is recommended that optimum humidity levels are maintained in their homes.

Some airborne viruses like the flu also thrive in drier air. A person who is ill with a cold or the flu will also breathe easier if the air is not too dry.

In addition to the health benefits of breathing properly humidified air, a humidifier can also help maintain furniture and paint in your home (paint can become too dry and crack, and wood furniture can become loose, warp, or even split when air is too dry).

The optimum relative humidity level in your home is between 30-50%.

Should I get a portable or central humidifier?

A portable humidifier is great for adding moisture to small spaces, such as the bedroom of a person who is fighting a cold virus. A portable humidifier will only humidify one room, and must be refilled with water periodically. If your home generally doesn't have a problem with dryness during the winter months, then a portable humidifier might meet your needs.

A central humidifier works with your furnace to distribute humidified air throughout your home as it is being heated. It will ensure that all the rooms in your home are comfortable. Central humidifiers pull water from your plumbing system, so they never need to be refilled. If your home tends to have a number of rooms where dryness is a seasonal problem, then a central humidifier is probably the right choice for your home.
