Great information to help you replace your furnace
1. The lowest bidder is not always the best
It seems to be a noraml occurance that the lowest installed price often comes with very poor quailty. Poor installation will lead to many more breakdowns that will cost you more in the end.
2. A new thermostat
The Majority of furnaces today are a two stage and requrie a new thermostat. Don't forget to ask about the cost to have a new one installed . It will be much less that at a later date and much better quality then one from a box store. It will also come with a full warranty.
3. High vs Extra High
The higher the efficiency means more electronics whcih means more cost. This cost will ultimalty save you more money by using less energy. So ultimatly the more you spend now the more you will save latter
4. Buy a reputable brand
Sticing to a majoy brand is always the best idea. There are lots of great furnaces on the market some at a lower cost claiming to be able to do the same as higher cost units. The issue comes later on, should your furnace ever need to be serviced ( and most do) it may be difficult to find someone able to help you. Parts may not be available and after hour emergency service can be a challage. Sticking to a well know brand means it will be properly supported should it ever break down. What good is a warranty if the service provider makes you wait weeks to get a part.
5. Make sure you get your furnace re sized
Many older furnaces were oversized. This means they were much bigger then the home really needed. This made very little differency at a time when energy prices were very low, but today with energy bills at an all time high we simply can't afford to waste our money. A reputable installer will verify the size of your home and your furnace and make sure they are the right match.
( It never hurts to have your ducts checked when they are at your home, having them cleaned at the same time as your new furnace install will save you money. Try to find a contractor that can do both the furnace and the duct cleaning for you with out having to sub the work out to an unknown company.)
6. When does the highest efficiency furnace make the most sense ?
When you live in a cold climate ( like Ottawa)
When you plan to stay in your home for 10 years or more
When your local energy costs are high
